Calverton villagers 'wary' as cars are targeted during series of thefts

Villagers of Calverton say they've been left feeling 'wary' after a spate of thefts and attempted thefts from vehicles.

Police continue to investigate incidents reported earlier this month.

Officers said bank cards were stolen from cars and cash was taken from vehicles which were "left insecure".

In other cases, suspects gained entry into unlocked cars but no valuables were taken.

People in the village said they were aware of the reports and that they were being cautious.

Retired Ken Jones, 72, said he'd been left feeling 'wary'.

“I hear about it around this area,” Mr Jones said. "I’m OK, I haven't had any problems with my car.

“I must admit I used to keep my car in the garage but now I'm on the drive.

“I do feel a little bit cautious; I am wary of what goes on.

“I just cross my fingers - it is a nice little village.”

Motorist Angela Robinson, who lives in Woodborough, said people in the village were aware of the spate.

“Whether they’re being more vigilant about it I can’t really say," she said.

“I think it’s not a small village anymore so news travels fast and I think with what's been happening people can at least inform each other now.”

A 79-year-old man, who asked not to be named, said: "They’re not after the car, it's what’s inside.

“I’ve heard quite a bit about it because my son's girlfriend actually had seen it.

“I’m a car driver - I’ve had my car for about 12 years now and I wouldn’t want to lose it because I take care of it.

“I don’t leave anything in it.”

Police are checking CCTV footage following reports of a man seen trying car door handles in the area.

Sergeant Neil Langham, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We’re working hard to identify those responsible for these crimes.

"While our enquiries remain ongoing we’re also urging motorists to be vigilant and make it as difficult as possible for criminals to target their vehicles.

“Due to most modern cars having alarms, force is rarely used to enter vehicles and, if the car is locked, offenders will just move on to the next one until they find one which is insecure.

“It’s also important people take steps to ensure their vehicles are as secure as possible as many insurance companies will not cover vehicles which have been left unlocked so there are additional risks in not securing them.

“We are urging people to make sure their vehicles are locked and they don’t leave any valuables on display.

“Find a secure place to park, such as in your garage if you have one, or alternatively ensure your vehicle is parked in a well-lit area.

“Having an alarm and immobiliser fitted to your vehicle is also an effective way of deterring criminals.

“We're also urging local residents to be alert and report any suspicious people or vehicles to us.”
