Last season, the Minnesota Vikings faced the Philadelphia Eagles in week two on Monday night at Lincoln Financial Field. Things didn’t go very well for them as they lost the game 24-7.
This season, the Vikings take on the Eagles in week two at Lincoln Financial Field, but this time the game is on Thursday night.

As the Vikings prepare for the defending Super Bowl runner-up, there are plenty of things to be positive about. Earlier on Wednesday, our staff each picked one player to watch in Thursday’s game and picked one storyline to watch. Here are our score predictions.

The Vikings ended up losing this game last year the same way that they lost in week one to the Buccaneers: turnovers killed them. The continuity on offense will be much better this time around for the Vikings and it will help them take a step forward. Will it make enough of a difference against the Super Bowl runner up from last season? Not likely, especially since they are 9-2 against the spread over their last 11 home games.

I expect the Vikings to bounce back and make fewer mistakes than they did against the Buccaneers – three turnovers and six penalties – but winning in Philadelphia on a short week doesn’t seem likely. This is part of the reason why winning in Week 1 was so important.

The Vikings have the most to prove, as they desperately need to avoid falling to 0-2 to start the year. I tend to bet on teams that are desperate, and I’m not going to stop that now. I think the Vikings do enough offensively to win, and the defense comes up with some timely stops down the stretch.

There are not many teams that you don’t want to play on a short week, but Philadelphia may be near the bottom of that list. Jalen Hurts is a battering ram that is not afraid to put his shoulder into a defender with his 6’1”, 225 pound frame. The Eagles will have an offensive line that could cause a lot of problems for Minnesota’s front seven. I expect Minnesota to put up a fight but the Eagles could potentially pull away late.

Philadelphia was sloppy in Week 1, using the matchup against the Patriots as a glorified preseason game for QB Jalen Hurts and the starters who didn’t play a down during the summer. Nick Sirianni has preached being efficient and urgent, and the Eagles are confident in their ability to handle WR Justin Jefferson, while being able to sustain offensive dominance over a Vikings defense that can be susceptible to strong offensive lines and a stout running game. Jalen Hurts improves on his Week 1 performance and Minnesota officially begins a rebuild.
