Vijay Merchant Trophy: Chhattisgarh pip Hyderabad as spinners claim 16 scalps

RAIPUR: Demonstrating their best ever performance, Chhattisgarh spinners Dhananjay Nayak and Aditya Agrawal claimed eight wickets each to ensure their team defeats mighty Hyderabad convincingly by nine wickets in the U-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy played at Baroda.

Winning the toss in the three-day format, Chhattisgarh chose to field first and restricted Hyderabad to just 75 runs in the first innings as Aditya and Dhananjay claimed five and four scalps respectively.

In reply, Chhattisgarh posted 196 runs, taking a decisive lead of 121 runs as Mayank Sahu played a fighting knock of 74 from 152 balls in the middle order after opener Yash Kumar Varda and Aaditya Shrivastava contributed 35 and 14 runs respectively.

Kunal Soni and Daksh Kumar Parakh scored 21 and 13. Dhananjay also contributed 24 from the bat. Hyderabad bowlers Rahul Karthikeya, Yuvraj Yadav, Mohammed Mosiquddin and Sudheev Neerukonda took two wickets each.

Trailing by 121 runs, Hyderabad team was bundled out for 152 in the second innings, giving Chhattisgarh a target of 32 to win.

Opener Aaron George scored 52 off 146 and Mosiquddin scored 28 off 153. Aditya took three wickets and Dhananjay took four in the second innings. Chasing the target, Chhattisgarh lost one wicket to win the match.
