BBC One drama Inside Man starring actor David Tennant aired for the first time on Monday night [September 26] leaving fans perplexed by the early storylines.
The show's premiere, written by former Doctor Who boss Stephen Moffat, included a number of different narratives that will cross over as the series progresses.
One sees vicar Harry Watling - played by 51-year-old Tennant - protecting a paedophile, whilst another finds American Jefferson Grieff (Stanley Tucci) on death row in his homeland.
The variety in the plots clearly caused confusion and a stir on social media, with one viewer declaring on Twitter : "Inside Man was just "Sherlock in prison", wasn't it? Same formula, regurgitated derivatively for less dramatic effect. It's all over the place, ridiculously convoluted, trying to create a narrative out of a nonsensical case which was probably rejected as a Sherlock joke / subplot."
Another added: "As it stands, I want to watch another episode to see what happens but as an episode of TV it was riddled with issues."
A third wrote: "Inside Man is the most ridiculous and bonkers show I've seen in 2022 so far. It makes absolutely no sense but is riveting all the way through. Like a big, mad, dark fever-dream. If Moffat can stick the landing (always a big if), it'll be an insane gem. If not. it'll be just c**p."
And a fourth said: "What started good became preposterous as soon as the vicar lied to the tutor. It totally lost the plot. Very disappointed. Goodbye."
Episode two of Inside Man airs on Tuesday [September 27] at 9pm on BBC One. The miniseries' two remaining episodes will be shown on October 3 and 4 respectively.
Tennant, meanwhile, is set to star in a new behind-the-scenes Doctor Who spin-off show, which will accompany the sci-fi series from 2023.
Returning showrunner Russell T. Davies has commissioned the series - believed to be called Doctor Who: Unleashed - which will begin next year in conjunction with the 60th anniversary special which will see Tennant reprise his role as the Tenth Doctor alongside Catherine Tate as his companion Donna Noble.
