Viewers of ITV documentary The Killing of PC Harper praise widow's brave fight for justice

ITV series The Killing of PC Harper: A Widow’s Fight for Justice has stirred strong emotions in viewers. The show aired on Tuesday night at 9pm and tells the tragic story of police officer Andrew Harper's death.

He was killed in the line of duty, and had been responding to reports of a burglary in progress when he became caught in a strap that was fastened to the back of a getaway car. PC Harper's widow, Lissie Harper, vowed to campaign for justice after those responsible for his death were found guilty of manslaughter, but acquitted of murder.

Harpers Law was formed in 2020 and introduced a life sentence for criminals whose actions cause the death of any emergency worker, including police officers. Part of the programme showed Lissie's fight for justice, with some viewers taking to social media to praise her courage. Many expressed their sadness over PC Harper's tragic death.

Pamela Tweeted: "Horrific. Senseless. Ruthless. Heartless. Loss of a genuinely lovely officer. PC Harper was worth his weight in gold to his wife Lissie. Wickedly taken away from her. Andrew was a loving husband and a fine officer #TheKillingOfPcHarper."

@TheRealDeclanKincaid wrote: "The killing of PC Andrew Harper is just horrific, so heartbreaking & cruel. This documentary on #ITV is so sad. It annoys me that people can behave in such a way to the police who are people like us and who we all need."

Andy Platt said: "Hugely emotional watch, such a sad loss to TVP and Lissie Harper. Such a disappointing verdict. Humbled that Lissie has fought for Harper’s law for Andrew and every other brave officer who have lost their lives. RIP PC Harper #thekillingofpcharper."

@NasminRashid wrote: "Married only 4 weeks, widowed at the age of 24 is cruel enough but knowing how your sweetheart died - dragged by the ankle on a country road late at night for a mile at speeds up to 60 miles an hour is heart wrenching. Sometimes I think is should be an eye for an eye #PCHarper."

@JennaB855 commented: "Lissie Harper is an extraordinary woman. Always had so much respect for her dealing with such horrific grief as she must be dealing with every day. #PCHarper #trevormcdonald."

@SueOk38 Tweeted: "Lissie Harper, continue fighting for what you believe in."
