Viewers mock Channel 4 Vardy v Rooney drama as 'comedy gold' as 'thoughts' are with Peter Andre

Viewers have hailed a Channel 4 drama about Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy's trial as "comedy gold." As people tuned in on Wednesday night to relive the famous 'Wagatha Christie' case, many couldn't help laughing as the first of a two-part film, created from the court transcripts, unfolded.

Viewers tuned into the first instalment of Vardy v Rooney: A Courtroom Drama as WAG Rebekah, played by Harry Potter star Natalia Tena, took to the stand. The drama explored the highly publicised court case that saw former Manchester United footballer Wayne Rooney's wife Coleen, played by This Is England star Chanel Cresswell, allege that Rebekah, the wife of Leicester City player Jamie Vardy, had been leaking fake stories to tabloids in exchange for money.

One viewer @WivFunnyFarm tweeted: "Strangely awful yet brilliant & hilarious." @_nik88 laughed: "I am absolutely p***ing myself at this! Comedy gold."

@danholling slammed: "Lasted 14 mins. Absolutely s***e." @2jonkershaw mocked: "I can see a new Christmas tradition forming. Every year we’ll gather the family around the TV and watch #VardyvRooney. A classic modern morality tale."

@itsasheactually remarked: "#VardyvRooney is so funny and ridiculous." @MckBethy asked: "What is this c**p and why am I watching it? Ain't turning it over though. It's that bad it's... bad."

@KellyCrimeBooks commented: "#VardyvRooney - is this real? Guys, we don’t need to dramatise everything." @Topherblu3 said: "What the f*** is this Vardy v Rooney s***e on Channel 4, who are these actors meant to look like? Someone needs to have a word regarding the casting on this!" And @clare_fairz said: "#VardyvRooney this is already the best comedy I've seen for years."

Viewers spared a thought for pop star Peter Andre when the courtroom drama revisited the moment Rebekah was questioned about likening the Mysterious Girl hitmaker's manhood to a "small chipolata." During the court case, she was asked about a 2004 kiss-and-tell interview, in which she described a sexual encounter with singer Peter.

In the proceedings at London’s High Court, she took to the stand to admit she regretted describing Andre's 'manhood' as a "chipolata." Peter, who starred in I’m A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! in 2004, took to Instagram to defend his pride. He wrote: “Do you know how hard it is to keep biting my lip on situations? But the way I look at it, most people saw in the jungle how an acorn turned into an oak so I think I’m OK.” He then added: “At least she has now admitted it wasn’t true. And was forced to say it.”

@leeleeCThomas tweeted: "If I was Peter Andre I’d be fuming right now." @socialmediajon1 echoed: "Thoughts are with Peter Andre tonight." @LawrieBlaz asked: "What has Peter Andre done to deserve this? In the first 10 minutes." @k4ty_b said: "All I can say is poor Peter Andre lol." And @lozkay15 also messaged: "Poor Peter Andre."

Coleen's barrister David Sherborne, played by Michael Sheen, showed her a print of the article in the witness box before reading the headline: “Peter’s hung like a small chipolata, shaved, slobbery, lasts five minutes." He then read excerpts from the story, which included the line “he had the smallest trouser equipment I’ve ever seen” and managed “just five minutes of sex with Rebekah."

This summer Rebekah, 40, lost a libel battle against 36-year-old Coleen over a viral social media post after a High Court judge found it was "substantially true." In the post, Coleen said she had carried out a "sting operation" and accused Vardy of leaking “false stories” about her private life to the press. Her sleuthing efforts saw her dubbed 'Wagatha Christie' in reference to the popular mystery writer.
