ITV tribute documentary For The Love of Paul O’Grady left viewers “in tears” within minutes. The hour-long film celebrated the life of Paul, who passed away aged 67 last week - read more about that here.
The TV channel, which has had a long working relationship with the star, was keen to pay tribute to him with a special show, which will air at 8pm tonight. It comes ahead of the 11th series of Paul O'Grady: For The Love of Dogs, which will air as planned on April 13.
During his career, he hosted The Paul O’Grady Show, Blind Date and Blankety Blank, as well as ITV’s multi-award-winning For The Love Of Dogs. In a statement after his death, ITV’s managing director of media and entertainment Kevin Lygo remembered him as a “huge, inimitable talent”.
Paul O’Grady was perhaps best known for his drag alter ego Lily Savage. When he rested the character, he would go on to host shows under his own name. Following the comedian’s death last week, tributes poured in from across the showbiz world. The likes of Carol Vorderman, Julian Clary, Sally Lindsay and many more - all of whom were Paul’s friends - featured in the documentary.
“Already weeping at this 'For the love of Paul O'Grady'. What an amazing, ground breaking, brilliant man,” wrote one person after watching the documentary. A second echoed: “Watching For the Love of Paul O’Grady on @ITV and the waterworks started before the opening titles. This is going to be a hell of an hour.”
A third then wrote: “This Paul O'Grady programme is going to make me laugh a lot and then cry.” A fourth added: “This Paul O'Grady tribute on ITV is so, so good. These quick turn arounds often feel rushed & opportunistic but this is very special. So much love from @carolvorders, @sally_lindsay, @JulianClary et al. I warn you, though, you'll be sobbing…”
Some famous faces also paid tribute to their friend as part of the special show. Carol Vorderman said: "He was not only brilliant as an entertainer, he was a force for good."
“I think Lily got too much for Paul and he said, ‘Nah, I’m going to be me. I’m going to be myself.'” said Sally Lindsay on why Paul O’Grady said goodbye to Lily Savage alter ego and on embracing himself.
Paul's partner Andre Portasio shared the tragic news of the star's passing in a statement on March 29. “It is with great sadness that I inform you that Paul has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully yesterday evening,” Mr Portasio said in his statement.
“We ask, at this difficult time, that whilst you celebrate his life you also respect our privacy as we come to terms with this loss. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion.
“I know that he would want me to thank you for all the love you have shown him over the years.” For the Love of Paul O’Grady is available to watch on ITVX.
