NAGPUR: For the second time in the Candidates Chess tournament, Vidit Gujrathi surprised world No. 3 Hikaru Nakamura to stay in the hunt as D Gukesh and Ian Nepomniachtchi continued to share lead in Toronto on a special Sunday for the three Indian grandmasters.
The 29-year-old Vidit stole the limelight when he halted the winning run of second seed Nakamura. The Indian now shares the joint third position with 4.5 points with both the American GMs — Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana. The latter, ranked No. 2, was held to a draw by tournament’s lowest seed Nijat Abasov of Azerbaijan. Tournament’s co-leader Nepo escaped to a draw against French No. 1 Alireza Firouzja.
