Israel Adesanya has a major beef with Dricus Du Plessis, a fight between them would be easy to promote, and it’d be a guaranteed fresh matchup against a top contender for the UFC middleweight champion.
And yet, it’s not happening – at least not next.
Instead, UFC president Dana White and the promotional brass already have made up their mind that Du Plessis will fight former champ Robert Whittaker in a title eliminator in July at UFC 290. Meaning, if Whittaker wins, we’ll get a trilogy between him and Adesanya, who owns wins in two previous matchups, rather than a new fight.
It’s not that the UFC can’t change this situation. It can do whatever it wants and often does. So what does this say that the UFC and Adesanya didn’t just address this from the beginning given a fight with Du Plessis seems like a slam dunk. Is this fair or foul for both the UFC and Izzy?
