Video emerges as mini tornado rips through Cork street and emergency services rush to scene

Emergency services were called to the scene last night after reports of a 'mini tornado' ripping through a street in Cork city.

The freak wind hit Barrack street overnight as residents were awoken by noise and debris being thrown all over the road, leaving a trail of destruction, Cork Beo reports.

The bottom of Barrack St was sealed off by emergency services and photos of the scene show the damage, with one sheet of corrugated iron seen bent out of shape and hanging from electric wires.

Gardai and the Cork City Fire Brigade rushed to the area and worked late into the night to make the scene safe. The incident happened shortly before 1am as strong winds and rain lashed down on the city.

A Status Yellow warning was in place yesterday, warning of gale-force winds along coastal areas, with the strongest gusts hitting north of 80km/h. While storms were expected to roll in from the Atlantic throughout the week, the severity of the weather on Barrack St was certainly unexpected.

The whole road was littered with rubbish after the gales tipped over several domestic bins.

Houses in the area have sustained significant damage after the wind ripped tiles off several roofs, shattered windows and even caused visible marks to interiors. One local resident woke up to fresh cracks on their bedroom ceiling caused by the overnight storm.

Emergency services are apparently referring to the weather incident as a "high vortex wind". This morning, even emergency personnel taking over from the night shift were surprised at the extent of the damage.

At present, the road remains closed. Cork City Council has been approached for comment.
