Victoria and David Beckham's Cotswolds home has been well-documented via both the documentary, Beckham, and their respective social media accounts. The converted barn is a sight to behold, with additions of a pizza oven and sauna in the historic property.
Recently, we couldn't help but admire a unique fixture in the home that really elevates the space: an ornate chandelier. In a post shared to the Victoria Beckham Beauty page, we can see the former Spice Girl and businesswoman in a high-ceilinged sitting room, with a magnificent chandelier hanging above. The wood panels are instantly made chic thanks to the delicate details of the lighting piece – a perfect of example of contrasting hard materials with dainty ones.
Experts say that in a space with high ceilings, such as the Beckham's, it is important to have a lighting source that will be dispersed evenly across a room. This means that larger fixtures are a great lighting idea for these expansive spaces.
'High ceilings are a common trope of Victorian properties, but unlike Georgian period homes, they don’t always benefit so much from large windows, as they often have a mix in sizing,' says interior designer and advisor to Vinterior, Zoe Newson. 'This means having evenly spread lighting is integral to maintaining a bright, welcoming space like a hallway or stairwell.'
With that being said, Newson mentions that one chandelier should not be solely relied on as a source of light.
'Make the most of the high ceilings with a feature chandelier and then use a mixture of table and standing lamps to light the corners the overhead light doesn’t reach,' she says.
We can see in Beckham's video clip that there is a table lamp behind her to give the room an extra source of light.
Finally, while the Beckhams have opted for a more traditional and antique-inspired chandelier, Newson says that high ceilings allow for versatility with lighting fixtures. Those who prefer contemporary fixtures can just as easily implement a modern piece in a restored home.
'The high ceilings and often uniquely shaped rooms give you the opportunity to really get creative, mixing and matching vintage and modern lighting pieces together and experimenting with varied textures and colors, such as a patterned lampshade or metal anglepoise wall light,' Newson states.
