Victor Orta's Joe Gelhardt belief as Leeds United director revels in new contract announcements

Leeds United director of football Victor Orta has expressed his delight at tying down Joe Gelhardt, Sam Greenwood and Crysencio Summerville to new long-term contracts. Gelhardt has put pen-to-paper on a new deal that runs until the summer of 2027, while Greenwood and Summerville have both signed until the summer of 2026.

The trio all made the switch to Elland Road two years ago ahead of Leeds’ first season back in the Premier League and shone brightly in under 23s football. The three of them went onto make their top-flight debuts for the club last term, with Summerville’s arriving away at Newcastle United in September 2021, Gelhardt’s at Southampton in October 2021 and Greenwood’s against former club Arsenal in December 2021.

Gelhardt in particular was able to make his mark on the first team, as he scored two goals, provided two assists and won two penalties in the 732 minutes of Premier League football he was given. Greenwood and Summerville’s impact have been a little more fleeting so far, though the former was handed a start in Leeds’ crucial final day victory at Brentford in May.

Speaking to Leeds United, Orta is hoping that the 2022/23 campaign will bring more ‘magical moments’ from Gelhardt, and enable both Greenwood and Summerville to become first team regulars.

He said: “We are delighted to see Sam sign a new deal with the club. We knew when we brought him here from Arsenal that he was a top talent.

“He went on to impress in the Under-23s and finally up in the first team, showing a lot of versatility. We look forward to watching his career unfold at Elland Road.

“Crysencio is an exciting talent. We have seen what he can do in the Under-23 setup and this year is his time to kick on and deliver in the first team.

“I strongly believe he can become an important player for us. Now is the time for him to focus and and work harder than ever to force himself into the team and stay there.

“Re-signing Joe is an important moment for us this summer. He is the kind of player that can change games, and the fans know this too.

“We’ve already seen some magical moments from him last season, none more so than the assist for Pascal’s goal in the last minute against Brighton, or his goal against Norwich.

“We believe that Joe can go on and have an amazing career and we are delighted that he’s committed his long-term future to us.”
