Vicky Phelan says she is now in 'manageable pain' in positive social media update as she enjoys afternoon tea with her mum

Vicky Phelan has shared a positive update on social media revealing that she is now in "manageable pain" along with beautiful snaps of afternoon tea in a five-star hotel.

The CervicalCheck campaigner, 46, took a break from social media during March after she suffered serious complications following a course of radiotherapy in February. At the time she admitted that throughout her cancer treatment, she’d "never been in so much pain".

However, in an update on Wednesday, Vicky announced that she was back walking on her "own two feet" without the help of a Zimmer frame or a wheelchair.

The mother-of-two posted a series of pictures, wearing a bright pink blazer, floral skirt and white runners, as she celebrated her mother and godmother's birthdays with a "fabulous" afternoon tea at Adare Manor in Limerick.

In a post on social media, Vicky said: "I'm BACK! For now anyway....I am finally back walking on my own two feet for more than a few feet without having to use a four wheel or three wheel mobility aid and, oh boy, does it feel good

"My back is still not great and I can only walk very short distances and am still in pain BUT it is manageable AND I can get out of the house.

"And boy have I gotten out of the house in style this week. I wanted to treat my mother and my godmother to afternoon tea at @theadaremanor for their birthdays, which they both celebrated in March. Two weeks ago, I honestly thought it would never happen BUT the human body and the human spirit are AMAZING things.

"And so, today my aunt picked me up from my house and whisked us off to Adare Manor where we spent the whole afternoon drinking various different teas and coffees and enjoying the savoury and sweet treats that staff kept bringing to our table. We had a most fabulous afternoon and made more wonderful memories."

Last month, the Limerick native announced that she would not be making the trip to Co Mayo on April 2 for Charlie Bird's Motor Neurone Disease fundraiser due to her decline in health.

Vicky had previously pledged to do "everything in her power" to join the veteran RTE broadcaster at the Climb with Charlie event which will see hundreds of people take to Croagh Patrick on April 2.

At the time she wrote: "And so, I have had to make the hard decision NOT to make the journey to Croagh Patrick in April for the #climbwithcharlie I am simply not well enough either physically or mentally.

"The past few weeks have really knocked the stuffing out of me and I need to focus on just getting well again. I have already been in touch with Charlie and he has been great about it."
