Vicky Phelan’s image projected onto GPO ahead of new documentary

A striking image of Vicky Phelan has been projected onto the GPO ahead of the release of a documentary movie about her life.

‘Vicky’ will debut in Irish cinemas next week and has been voted Best Irish Documentary by the Dublin Film Critics circle. The digital image has been projected onto the O’ Connell Street building to celebrate the life of the campaigner and advocate.

The documentary will premiere on October 7th and follows Vicky’s journey from her false smear test result to her High Court campaign for justice. It has been described by director Sasha King as a tale of “hope, courage and resilience.”

Production company Volta Pictures said of the film: “We are delighted to share the artwork for the award-winning documentary VICKY, which opens in Irish cinemas on October 7th. A story of courage & hope, VICKY, documents Vicky Phelan’s personal journey & her heroic work to uncover the CervicalCheck scandal in Ireland.”

The 48-year-old was one of hundreds of women who received a false negative result for cervical cancer in 2011. She was diagnosed with terminal cancer three years later. Her advocacy led to several reviews of Ireland’s cervical cancer screening programme CervicalCheck, as well as inspiring other women affected by the scandal to come forward.

The mother of two later secured a win against the US laboratory responsible for the false results. She was awarded a sum of €2.16 million by the High Court. She has since made numerous appearances in Irish media on behalf of the women and families affected by the tragedy.

Previous publicised artwork of Vicky includes a caricature her and friend Charlie Bird on the summit of Croagh Patrick. The pair were set to climb the Mayo mountain to raise funds for the Irish Motor Neuron Disease Association, although Vicky had to bow out from participating due to ill health.
