Vicious street attack left victim needing 'serious dental work'

A street attack on a man as he ate a takeaway left him needing "some serious dental work", a court heard. A short CCTV clip showed the victim tucking into his food on a street corner and attacker Daniel Ball pushing him.

The contents of the man's takeaway tray were sent flying as he toppled to the ground as he was repeatedly punched and kicked. Andy Conboy, prosecuting at Nottingham Magistrates' Court, said the cost of the dental treatment and a week's loss of earnings for the victim came to some £5,600. "He needed some very serious dental treatment," added Mr Conboy.

Ball, wearing shorts, trainers and a red T-shirt, appeared before District Judge Leo Pyle on Monday (September 12). He pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm to the victim in High Street, Warsop, on July 4, 2021.

Aged 35 and from Morven Terrace, Warsop, Ball will be sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on October 10. Judge Pyle ordered a pre-sentence report with "all sentencing options" available.

Discussing the sentencing guidance, Judge Pyle said Ball had kicked the man - a kick being a weapon equivalent - and "it's certainly sustained". Mr Conboy said it was "high culpability" and "a prolonged assault", and put the sentencing range between two to four years in prison.

The judge told Ball: "I take the view my sentencing powers, in terms of dealing with you at this court, are insufficient. I commit you for sentence at Nottingham Crown Court on October 10 and I bail you to attend at 9.30am.

"There are two bail conditions; not to have contact directly or indirectly with the victim. If you see him on the street, cross the road. If you walk into a pub and he is there, go into another pub. Keep all appointments with the probation service who will prepare a report on you."
