Vicente Besuijen accused of Rangers 'leg breaker' on Scott Arfield as stunned former refs slam officials

Aberdeen's Vicente Besuijen has been told he should've received a red card during his side's defeat to Rangers on Saturday.

The Dutchman was booked by referee John Beaton for a lunge on Scott Arfield but two former grade 1 officials reckon he got off lightly.

Steve Conroy and Des Roache suspect Besuijen was seeking "retribution" on the Rangers midfielder after he too escaped punishment for a foul on Lewis Ferguson that left the Dons star in agony.

Besuijen wiped Arfield out near the touchline moments later and the ex-refs were unanimous in their verdict, insisting the all-round officiating from Beaton to his fourth official was poor.

Conroy told the Get Involved Referee podcast : "You can see that he's reacting to something and he lunges and goes in without any regard for his opponent.

"I would have issued a red card, without question.

"You would have to ask John how he didn't see it because when you see a challenge like that coming you get yourself into position.

"However, in mitigation, it's side on so he's maybe caught behind the Aberdeen player but someone of John's experience should be anticipating that and getting into position.

"The question is where was the fourth official? He was standing right there.

"It was a nasty one. It was a potential leg-breaker. I would be hoping that would be looked at."

And Roache agreed: "You can see it unfolding and John should have been in a better position.

"You can see he's not going for the ball, he's only going to take out the player and it's maybe a bit of retribution after what happened to his team-mate a couple of moments earlier.

"All the officials should have been on red alert. If John's not seen it then he should be asking his team - 'what did you see there?'.

"The assistant is looking down the line potentially, but definitely the fourth official who was standing right in front of the dugouts."
