Vice President Kamala Harris has made significant progress in Iowa, a state previously considered a stronghold for former President Trump. According to the latest Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll, Harris has reduced Trump's lead to just four points, with Trump leading at 47% and Harris at 43%.
This shift marks a notable change from earlier this year when Trump held an 18-point lead over President Biden in Iowa. Pollster J. Ann Selzer of Selzer & Co. emphasized that the race has significantly tightened, indicating that Trump's lead is not as secure as it may seem.
Historically, Iowa has been a swing state, having voted for both Democratic and Republican candidates in past elections. While Trump won the state comfortably in 2016 and 2020, Harris' recent surge suggests a potential shift in the state's political landscape.
The poll also highlighted the influence of female voters, with Harris leading Trump among women by a significant margin. Additionally, various demographic groups, including younger voters, city residents, and college-educated individuals, showed an increased intention to vote compared to previous surveys.
Surveyed between September 8 and 11, the poll included 811 Iowa residents aged 18 and older, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points. The uptick in voter engagement observed in this poll may indicate a changing dynamic in the upcoming election.
