A young man's continued association with a youth gang after he was charged with a teenage basketballer's murder posed too real a risk for a judge to release him back into the community.
Ater "Elia" Good, 16, was gunned down while walking in Fitzroy in Melbourne's inner north after midnight on January 3.
Nineteen-year-old Abdijalil Abdirahman Warsame from Heidelberg West, in Melbourne's northeast, was one of four men charged with Ater's murder, and on Tuesday applied for bail in the Victorian Supreme Court.
