Vic MP draws Libs ire over abortion post

An outspoken Victorian Liberal MP has been encouraged to consider his future in the party after posting a "deplorable" view on abortion.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Bernie Finn said he was "praying" for abortion to be banned in Victoria after a leaked draft intimated the US Supreme Court has voted to overturn its landmark Roe v Wade decision.

"So excited the US is on the verge of a major breakthrough to civilisation. Praying it will come here soon. Killing babies is criminal," he wrote in the undeleted post.

In a subsequent interaction with another user, Mr Finn said he did not support abortion even in cases where a woman is sexually assaulted.

The upper house MPs has repeatedly stoked online controversy, calling the state's police force a "despot's militia", describing Premier Daniel Andrews in an indecent position with a goat and posting a meme about a Chinese rocket falling on the ABC or his political rivals.

Mr Finn's views on abortion are well known, with him marching in a pro-life rally in 2018, and he has doubled down on his recent post.

"My views on the subject are no state secret. I will continue to do everything in my power to overturn what is an entirely evil law," he said in a statement.

But with a state election in November, Opposition Leader Matthew Guy has laid down the law to Mr Finn ahead of facing preselection in coming months.

"I am frankly sick of it and I think my colleagues are sick of it," he told reporters on Friday.

"I've not encountered a single one in the last 24 hours who is not as sick of it as I am."

Liberal frontbencher James Newbury joined the pile-on, saying Mr Finn's position that a man "should legislate control over a woman's body is deeply disturbing and dangerous".

"The developments in America are causing distress to women around the world, and Finn's cheering is sick," the Brighton MP tweeted.

Mr Guy similarly agreed that aspect of Mr Finn's stance was "deplorable".

The state Liberal leader declined to say if he thinks Mr Finn should move to the crossbench, declaring he'll ultimately be answerable to party rank and file during preselection.

"Bernie needs to work out whether he wants to be on the team as part of a parliamentary Liberal Party," he said.

"If one of us wants to go out and sit at home and make social media posts all day, which are infuriating to the rest of us, I think you can tell that ... we've had enough of it."
