Dog owners have been hit with an urgent warning after a pet dog passed a rare disease to its owner in a 'tragic' case. A woman was hospitalised after contracting Brucella canis, a contagious bacterial infection caused by the bacterium, from her foster dog, in the first confirmed dog -to-human case in the UK.
The British Veterinary Association (BVA) is issuing a strong reminder about the serious disease risks from importing dogs from abroad and is urging all prospective dog owners to protect the health of dogs and humans in the UK by rehoming dogs from within the country instead. BVA is also reissuing its calls to Government to tighten pet import rules.
