Veteran BBC and ITV presenter John Stapleton announces Parkinson’s diagnosis

Broadcaster John Stapleton has revealed that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

The journalist, who has fronted Newsnight, Panorama, GMTV, and Daybreak, shared the news on Monday’s Morning Live in a heartbreaking documentary.

Discussing his diagnosis alongside his son, BBC presenter Nick Stapleton, he shared: “Speaking is how I’ve earned my living for the best part of 50 years, and it’s very frustrating sometimes, particularly if people are constantly saying to you, ‘sorry, what did you say?’

“And you have to repeat yourself time and time and time again.

“I’m fairly pragmatic about the prospect of this getting worse. I try to remain positive, because what’s the point of not being [positive].”

The Parkinson’s UK website outlines over 40 symptoms associated with the progressive neurological condition. These symptoms can include stiffness, slowed movement, mild cognitive and memory issues, sleep disturbances, and pain.

In the film, Nick, John's son, delves into how the family can tackle challenging conversations regarding the diagnosis and navigate the accompanying difficulties.

Nick emphasised that it’s "early days for us" following his father's diagnosis, noting that John remains "fairly independent" for now.

He continued: “But nonetheless I want to start these conversations now, to get some potentially difficult topics out in the open and make it easier for later on.”

John also reflected on his mother’s battle with Parkinson’s, noting that he is facing some of the same mobility issues she experienced.

The news journalist said one of the main problems she faced was her "inability to do things like open a can of beans or peel a potato", which he is now experiencing.

Following their discussion, John said he was looking to the future. He added: “The fact that I've had an early diagnosis, the fact that I've seen what happened to my mother firsthand is all a big bonus in many ways, because it enables me to look at it practically, realistically and plan sensibly for the future.”The full film is now available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
