Renowned character actor John Ashton, best known for his role as the gruff yet endearing police detective John Taggart in the iconic 'Beverly Hills Cop' films, has sadly passed away at the age of 76. The news of his death was confirmed by his family in a statement released by his manager on Sunday.

Throughout his illustrious career spanning over five decades, Ashton made a lasting impact on both television and film. His notable works include appearances in popular productions such as 'Midnight Run,' 'Little Big League,' and 'Gone Baby Gone.'

In the 'Beverly Hills Cop' series, Ashton portrayed an integral character alongside Eddie Murphy's Axel Foley. As Detective Taggart, he brought a unique blend of skepticism and camaraderie to the trio, which also featured Judge Reinhold as Billy Rosewood. Ashton's portrayal of the by-the-book yet occasionally adventurous Taggart endeared him to audiences across all four films in the franchise.

One of Ashton's memorable roles was in the 1988 comedy 'Midnight Run,' where he played a rival bounty hunter pursuing a wanted accountant, portrayed by Charles Grodin. His on-screen chemistry with Robert De Niro, who played Jack Walsh, added depth and humor to the film.

Reflecting on his audition experience with De Niro, Ashton shared an anecdote that highlighted his fearless approach to the craft. His willingness to stand up to the legendary actor ultimately impressed De Niro and secured him the role.

John Ashton is survived by his wife of 24 years, Robin Hoye, as well as his children, stepchildren, grandson, siblings, and extended family. His contributions to the entertainment industry will be remembered fondly by fans and colleagues alike.
