Vet urges dog owners to use suntan cream on their pets to avoid sunburn

With the temperatures set to rise again over the weekend and into early next week, those of us heading out to enjoy the sunshine will be reaching for the Sun Protection Factor (SPF). But it's not just humans who need to keep topped up on the sun protection, your dog needs it too according to a vet who is now urging owners to apply pet-friendly sunscreen.

Almost half of Brits are completely unaware that dogs need sun protection applied before they head out in the sun, according to new research by travel brand hoo. Like us, our pets are susceptible to burning in the sun and with UV levels peaking again in the next few days it's something dog owners need to think about, especially if your furry friend is partial to sitting in the sun.

It's essential to keep your eye on your dog in sunny weather and if they have itchy and red skin with patches that are dry or cracked or tender to touch - it's likely they have sunburn. Dr Anna Ewers Clark, who is a veterinary expert at Blue Cross, is urging all dog owners to use canine-friendly, as UK temperatures continue to rise, The Mirror reports.
