Vet shares five things she would never do when looking after a dog

A vet has taken to social media to advice of five things you should never do if you own a dog.

TikTok user @Cat_The_Vet is a veterinarian from the UK who shares her knowledge about animals on the video sharing platform. In a video, with more than 67,000 likes, the pet health expert shared a list of five things that she wouldn't do with her own dog, Mandy, and suggests that you shouldn't either.

From what your dog eats to how they play it can all have an impact on their lives - with some choices even lowering their life expectancy by up to two years.

Here is Cat's list of top five 'don'ts' for owning a dog.

Never throw a stick

Cat said: "The injuries that are caused by throwing sticks are horrendous. Down their mouths, into their necks, they can be super serious. Mandy will never be chasing a stick."

Never use a ball thrower

The vet said that although her dog loves tennis balls, she will never use a ball thrower to play fetch with her four-legged friend. She said: "They do incredible damage to dogs joints and the balls won't always be dog friendly ones."

Never feed them a raw food diet

Cat said: "You can feed your dog whatever you wish but for me the risk of nutritional imbalances and the risk of bacterial infections, to both her and my family, are far too great."

Never let your dog get fat

The fourth don't on Cat's list was to never let your pet get fat. She explained the health risks of obesity in dogs as she said that it can take "up to two years" off a dog's life. She added: "Not to mention the strain it puts on the joints and other parts of the body."

Always keep up to date with vaccines

The dog owner and vet said: "I do not want my dog getting really sick from preventative diseases." She advised keeping up with vaccines to keep your pet in top health.
