Vernon Kay was taken off air on doctor's orders on Tuesday, a day after his colleague Zoe Ball returned to BBC Radio 2 following an unexpected six-week break.
The DJ, who hosts the show after Ball from 9:30am until midday, was replaced by Gaby Roslin on Tuesday after developing a severe sore throat.
During Monday's broadcast, the 50-year-old sounded hoarse but managed to complete the show with assistance from his team and some pre-recorded segments.
The following day, the presenter took to his Instagram and revealed that he was under doctor’s orders to go on vocal rest.
Updating his followers about his health, he shared: “Morning everyone, under doctor's orders I'm resting my voice.
“It should be fine tomorrow, but I’m going to step away from the microphone this morning and let my vocal cords recover.
“They’re a bit strained, very hoarse. But don't worry, I will be back tomorrow."
Meanwhile, Roslin, who filled in for him, provided listeners with updates on air, explaining: “Gaby in for Vernon Kay. It's a joy to be here. Vernon, I hope your throat is feeling better.
“I was listening yesterday, I love the show but did worry about your throat. So take it easy, no talking today.”
Just last week, Kay found himself in another work-related pickle when he was delayed getting to his show in time due to transport issues.
Scott Mills had to step in and cover for 80 minutes of his slot after already filling in for Zoe Ball on the breakfast show that morning.
Kay had sent his colleague a voice note letting him know he was still "stuck on the platform" waiting for his train.
He said: “Hi Scott it's Vernon, well, I'll be honest with you I never thought this would happen.
“I'm still stood at the platform miles away from Central London, miles away from the studio, and miles away from the microphone.”
Mills then added: “Now me and Vernon get the same trainline in, but sometimes, like today it's unreliable, I think this is a first right? He's late for his own show.”
His absence from the BBC airwaves comes after his colleague Ball made her comeback on Monday following an unscheduled six-week break, paying tribute to Jamie Theakston and Lauren Laverne amid their cancer battles.
The broadcaster, who is the BBC's highest-paid female presenter on a £950,000 annual salary, had been away from The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show since August 8.
Returning on Monday morning, she dubbed herself the "happy wanderer" saying: "I have wandered back. How was your Brat summer? Was it marvellous? Have you been enjoying summer?
"We did that back in the 90s, it was called something different then... bringing back memories."
There has been no official reason given as to why Ball had been absent for more than six weeks.
