A video has emerged of vegan protestors pouring litres of milk onto the floor of an Edinburgh Waitrose store in front of baffled staff. The supermarket was targeted by activists from Animal Rebellion who are demanding climate and animal justice on Saturday, October 15.
Two young women were filmed taking bottles of milk off the refrigerated shelf before spilling their contents over the ground. A third demonstrator stood in front of the fridges holding a sign that read: “Plant based future.”
A male store worker interrupted an impassioned speech from one of the activists and tried to usher her away from the fridges saying “you’ve made your point”.
Animal Rebellion say the protest was part of a co-ordinated action across stores in London, Norwich, Manchester and Edinburgh.
Sharing the video footage, the campaign group wrote: “Milk Pours are currently happening across the UK. All are concerned individuals calling on the government to give us a liveable future, a PlantBasedFuture. Here's the latest milk pour happening in Edinburgh Waitrose.”
It is not currently known whether any of the demonstrators were arrested at the store in the Scottish capital.
The animal and climate group is calling for wholesale governmental support for farmers and fishing communities to transition to a plant-based food system and a programme of rewilding that will secure a future for generations to come by drawing down carbon from the atmosphere and restoring vital habitats to native wildlife.
Animal Rebellion is a mass movement using nonviolent civil disobedience to call for a just, sustainable plant-based food system.
A Waitrose spokesperson said: "We're proud of our industry leading animal welfare standards, and grateful for our partners responded quickly and professionally. We are now trading as normal."
