Motherwell assistant boss Brian Kerr backs VAR’s introduction to Scottish football, and says it will benefit everybody by helping to get big decisions right.
Former midfielder Kerr reckons the technology will provide a level playing field and bring Scottish football in line with top European leagues who are already using VAR.
It comes in this evening with Hibs hosting St Johnstone this evening, and Motherwell will get a taste of it when they entertain Aberdeen tomorrow.
Kerr says the Fir Park club backed VAR and is looking forward to it, believing it will give referees a helping hand.
He said: “It’s a big thing for Scottish football. It puts us on a level playing field with the other top European leagues that have put it in place.
“It’s important that we keep up to date with that.
“Us as a club voted for it, so we want it, and it will clear up a lot of big decisions that are made, especially in terms of the offside stuff, so it’s something that we’re going to embrace.
“It’s not going to be perfect, we know that. There’s going to be teething problems, but if it helps for the better then it’s only right for Scottish football, and for us.”
Having been briefed by SFA head of refereeing operations Crawford Allan – which featured on the BBC documentary ‘VAR: Friend or Foe’ – Kerr knows it’s not going to be an exact science, but hopes it helps.
He said: “We know exactly the process, they’ve told us that it’s not always going to be perfect, but we’ve got to go with it.
“It’s going to be better than what we’ve got just now, it’s going to help referees, which is important.
“It’s not an easy job out there, so that will help them, and it just means that the decision at the end of the day is going to be easier, and it’s going to be right, most of the time.
“It’s going to give the right decision at the end of the day, it’s not going to benefit anybody any differently.
“The right decision will be made, hopefully 99 per cent of the time.”
Meanwhile, Kerr confirmed that striker Louis Moult is seeing a specialist and they will know the results “over the next few days.”
