New Delhi: Union Home Minister Nityanand Rai introduced a bill in the Rajya Sabha on Friday seeking to bring insults to or obstruction of the singing of Vande Mataram within the ambit of criminal law.
The Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, that was listed for introduction in the Upper House, seeks to amend the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. The proposed legislation would extend statutory protection to the national song, putting it on a legal footing similar to other national symbols already covered under the existing law.
