Van Hooijdonk makes frank admission about his future amid Nottingham Forest transfer links

Reported Nottingham Forest target Sydney van Hooijdonk admits that his young career is at a crossroads.

The Bologna forward bagged 19 goals on loan at Dutch top flight side Heerenveen this season and, although set to return to his parent club this summer, the 23-year-old says it may be a good time for him to be sold. Van Hooijdonk is the son of former Forest man Pierre and has enjoyed his return to the Eredivisie after a short stint in Italy, netting 23 goals in 47 games for the Dutch club since his initial spell in January 2022.

He has clearly inherited his dad’s goalscoring instincts, with Van Hooijdonk Sr. scoring 36 times in 71 games during his time at the City Ground, helping return the club to the top flight in 1999. Despite not being born when his father was scoring goals for the Reds, Sydney demonstrated his family’s feelings towards the club, being in attendance when Steve Cooper ’s side achieved promotion at Wembley last year.

The Athletic has reported that Forest are “looking at” a move for Van Hooijdonk Jr, who began his career at NAC Breda before moving to Bologna in 2021. The striker is claimed to have been “scouted” by the club as they assess their options for the upcoming transfer window.

Speaking to Dutch outlet vandaaginside.nl, the player said: “It will be interesting to see. I don’t know what’s going to happen. I’m going on vacation now and I will follow all the news.

“I assume I will just report back to Bologna. It’ll be a long summer I think. I am now 23, and I don’t want to be loaned out for another year. I don’t know if it’s financially feasible for Heerenveen to buy me.

“It was also agreed in advance; either I will play for Bologna, or I will be sold. If I don’t play there, I think it’s also a good time to be sold.”
