A carpenter smashed the company van into four parked vehicles and a lamppost – narrowly missing a startled pedestrian – before running off into the night and disappearing. Kalum Williams had spent the evening socialising and watching boxing on the television with friends before getting into the firm's vehicle and crashing it.
The first the boss knew his van was being used out of hours was when friends texted him to ask if he was okay as they had seen his van wrapped around a lamppost. A judge at Swansea Crown Court told 26-year-old Williams that if there were any proof that drink or drugs had been involved in the incident he would be going straight to prison.
Megan Jones, prosecuting, said shortly after midnight on October 10 last year police on patrol in the Pemberton area of Llanelli received reports of a van colliding with a number of parked cars and a lamppost near the Halfway traffic lights. When officers arrived they found four vehicles with "significant damage" and an abandoned van. Police were able to retrieve CCTV footage from a nearby property which showed the final seconds of the incident including how the out-of-control van had narrowly missed a pedestrian walking along the pavement. The footage also showed the driver of the van – later identified as Williams – and a number of passengers running away from the crash.
