Van driver caught speeding after smoking cannabis night before

A drug driver tested positive for cannabis after he was seen speeding in his work's Renault van. Martin Bramley, 45, of Helston Drive, Strelley, who had been in a driving job for ten months, was stopped on the A487, Porthmadog, in Wales, after 5am on November 8, 2022.

A PC Jones formed the opinion Bramley was driving over the speed limited and stopped to speak to Bramley whose van continued along the A487, officially the Fishguard to Bangor Trunk Road. Nottingham Magistrates' Court heard the van accelerated away and travelled over the 50mph speed limit at 62 mph.

Bramley did stop and and a drugs test tested positive for cannabis. Bramley pleaded guilty at court on Tuesday (February 21) to drug driving and speeding and was fined £66, ordered to pay costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £26. A driving ban was imposed for 12 months.

The court heard Bramley, a carer for his wife, had smoked cannabis the night before but had "no idea" it would still be in his system. He spoke to his boss the following day and handed in his notice and has not driven since.

District Judge Sunil Khanna said Bramley had been smoking drugs for quite some time and hoped he would understand that cannabis stays in the system for a considerable amount of days.
