Valve revives CS:GO as standalone download but there’s a catch

CS:GO is officially back with a dedicated download button on Steam, which will give you an easier way to revisit the classic shooter alongside CS2. But I must tell you it’s not quite as simple.

CS:GO now has a dedicated store page on Steam and can be installed as a separate title, just like any other game in your library. However, there are a few important limitations you need to understand before treating this like a proper revival.

This is a notable change from the previous instance, where you could access legacy CS:GO builds only as a “beta” branch within Counter-Strike 2. Now, Valve has split CS:GO out into its own app again, and you can keep both the games installed at the same time on your system.

For those who still don’t feel at home with CS2, this is the closest thing yet to an official route back to the Global Offensive. But while the download is real, you shouldn’t assume this means a full return to the old matchmaking experience.

At the time of writing, CS:GO appears on Steam as “Counter-Strike: Global Offensive” with its own separate install option. You can head to the store, add the game to your account, and install it directly.

Once installed, the game will sit in your library next to Counter-Strike 2 as a standalone entry, making it easy to swap between both games. This setup can be handy for creators or tournament organizers who want to run throwback events or those who want to test mechanics and maps in the older build without touching CS2’s files.

Can you still play on official Valve servers?

This is where the “catch” comes in. While you can now install CS:GO as a standalone app, Valve hasn’t restored full support for official matchmaking.

That means you can play unlisted and community servers, unlike CS2’s live matchmaking. CS:GO’s separate download is a big symbolic win for the community that never stopped asking for the classic game. It reduces the hassle for returning players and makes it easier for creators who want to show how old Counter-Strike really was to the newer audience.

Counter-Strike 2 remains Valve’s flagship edition and the version that will drive esports and official updates going forward. But with CS:GO just a few clicks away again, there’s finally an official, straightforward way to jump back into the game whenever you feel like.
