Native Trail is a red hot favourite for the opening Classic of the season but it might pay to chance unexposed EYDON (3.40). He returns to Newmarket having put in a breathtaking performance when landing the Fielden Stakes a couple of weeks ago.
The way he stormed home despite being held up off a steady gallop was most impressive. The fast ground suited him really well in that 1m1f contest and he clearly doesn’t lack for speed for this drop back to a mile. Have 2pts each-way at 20-1, with most bookies paying out on four places.
WHENTHEDEALINSDONE (3.00) is the lowest rated in the Betfair Palace House Stakes but official figures aren’t much of a guide to Group races. His progress was hampered by slow starts early last season but things clicked when dropped to today’s 5f distance later in the summer.
He had likely favourite Twilight Calls behind when successful at Glorious Goodwood and that must give him a decent chance on this step up to Group 3 grade. Have 1pt each-way at 25-1, with four places up for grabs with most bookies.
APOLLO ONE (1.50) was mixing it with the likes of Group sprinters Diligent Harry and Rohaan early last season. He was only beaten a neck by Blackrod when dropped into a 6f handicap on Newmarket’s July Course later in the summer.
A repeat of that effort would make him very interesting as he is much better off at the weights with the winner. He goes particularly well when fresh so a near-three-month break since his last run is in his favour. Have 1pt each-way at 25-1, with Sky Bet offering seven places and others stretching to six.
Newmarket’s card closes with another 6f handicap and ANNAF (5.25) has the class to run a big race. He only made his debut in January when successful on Newcastle’s all-weather track.
His 5f win at the same course a couple of months later shows he’s got stacks of pace and he put in his best effort yet when fourth on at the All-Weather Championships finals despite fluffing the start. The switch to turf shouldn’t be a problem so have 1pt each-way at 10-1.
