Valerie Bertinelli encourages self-acceptance and rejects societal weight standards

In a recent Instagram post, actress and Food Network star, Valerie Bertinelli, opened up about her decision to stop weighing herself and how it has positively impacted her mental and emotional well-being. In the post, Bertinelli shared a throwback photo of herself in a purple bikini, along with a caption expressing her frustration with societal standards of weight.

The 63-year-old actress revealed that she no longer steps on the scale because she believes that the notion of being 'considered overweight' at 150 pounds is arbitrary and unhelpful. She expressed her disappointment in herself for having believed these standards for far too long. Bertinelli emphasized that she now understands her true worth as a person, beyond her size or weight.

'I now, finally, know that I am a kind, considerate, funny, thoughtful woman,' she shared. 'So please remember, who you are and what your character is should never be overshadowed by what size you are or how much you weigh. You are enough. Just the way you are. F–k 'em.'

This is not the first time the 'One Day at a Time' alum has spoken out about her journey to self-acceptance. She became a spokesperson for Jenny Craig in 2007 and has been open about her struggles with body image. In a 2022 essay for New Beauty, Bertinelli confessed her belief that the number on the scale was never low enough and how it affected her self-esteem.

However, after completing her 2022 memoir, 'Enough Already,' Bertinelli made the decision to part ways with her scale once and for all. She realized that her clothes still fit, and her weight remained stable. Letting go of constant monitoring allowed her to focus on her overall well-being, both physically and mentally.
