Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Valentin Barco, though the versatile midfielder has already made a name for himself - and not entirely for the right reasons.
Barco was part of the Argentina squad that finished runners-up to Spain at the World Cup 2026, making just one appearance all tournament as a substitute in the final Group J fixture against Jordan.

Despite not featuring in the semi-final win over England, the 22-year-old still managed to make the headlines following an incident involving Jude Bellingham at full-time.
Amid Argentina’s post-match celebrations, clips soon circulated of Bellingham hitting Barco seemingly without provocation on the back of the head as the new Chelsea signing joined his team-mates on the pitch, prompting an angry response from the midfielder and those around him.
The pair exchanged words before teammates from both sides stepped in to prevent the confrontation from escalating further.
However, new footage appears to suggest where Bellingham’s motive came from.
Barco appears to be seen running onto the pitch following on Argentina’s late goals, away from the rest of the squad, and celebrating enthusiastically in front of the England players.

Though the incident attracted significant attention, Bellingham did not face retrospective disciplinary action and will not cross paths with Barco next season after Chelsea failed to qualify for the Champions League.
Barco, who previously had a spell in England with Brighton, becomes the latest arrival at Stamford Bridge this summer in what has been a hectic period under new head coach Xabi Alonso.
Danny Welbeck’s move from Brighton was announced on Saturday, hot on the heels of Maxence Lacroix’s switch from London rivals Crystal Palace.
Deals for Dastan Satpaev, Denner, Geovany Quenda and Emmanuel Emegha have officially been finalised during this window, while Marco Palestra has arrived from Italy to provide competition on the right-hand side of defence.
Chelsea’s biggest transfer so far has been that of Morgan Rogers, making the England international the most expensive British player in history by spending £117million to sign him from Aston Villa.
