V Rising passes 1 million units sold

It’s always wild when something comes out of nowhere and is instantly a sensation. Crafting games go through this often, and V Rising is the latest contender.

On Tuesday, Stunlock Studios announced that V Rising has sold more than 1 million units since its launch on May 17, 2022. Accomplishing that in just over one week is quite something, especially for an early access title. It’s not terribly surprising, though, since V Rising has been tearing up Steam and Twitch consistently in the past week.

For those unfamiliar with V Rising (most people), it’s an isometric survival-crafting game all about vampires. Take Diablo, smash it together with Valheim, and throw some Castlevania for good measure. Boom, that’s V Rising.

Time will tell if V Rising can maintain its popularity, but thus far, Stunlock Studios seems to know what fans want. Community manager Jeremy Fielding certainly didn’t expect this level of success coming. The team began working on V Rising three years ago and revealed it in May 2021 to relatively little fanfare.

“It’s been a slow ramp-up,” Fielding said via IGN. “A very small company with a brand new IP? It took a lot of people a long time to start to take notice.”

Things didn’t really begin picking up until people could get their hands on V Rising.

“We really started to get a lot of attention when we went into closed beta, when people really got an opportunity to get their hands on the game,” Fielding continues. “I think that’s when they started paying attention, which makes sense. When you’re just hearing about the concept it’s really hard to grasp what it is.”

‘Dark fantasy survival action RPG with vampires’ is certainly a mouthful, so I get what Fielding is alluding to here. Seems like a winning combination, though.
