'Utter b******s' to call 1-0 loss to title chasers Derry progress, insists Damien Duff

Damien Duff insists he won't tolerate anything less than a winning attitude at Shelbourne.

Newly promoted, with Duff replacing Ian Morris in the hot-seat in the close season, the make-up of the squad has vastly changed with the new boss bringing in a host of new faces.

Shels have earned four points from their opening four games and it will take time for the team to gel.

But when asked by Mirror Sport after Friday's 1-0 defeat to Derry City if conceding a 73rd minute winner to a Candystripes side tipped to push for title glory was progress, Duff replied: "No. Can I curse?

"No. That comment for me is utter b******s and that's what I told the lads.

"If it's one of them, 'oh, it's OK because we've lost 1-0 to Derry', we can all f****** leave the building and get a new staff and a new squad in.

"So, f****** nonsense. Did we create a lot on Friday night? No. Were we good on the ball? No, but never felt threatened.

"But yeah, to go in and say 'that's alright, we'll take the 1-0? No. F******* no. No chance. So, excuse my French."

However Duff was clear that such an attitude had not been evident in the home dressing-room.

"No, absolutely not," the former Chelsea and Ireland star said. "I've not seen it but I'm just letting them know that's not what I think either.

"So, absolutely not, I haven't spotted it but I never will because I've flung my hat on the guys, they're a f****** great group.

"I can't speak highly enough of them. They are disappointed, it ties in with the UCD game the other night, not taking care of the ball which you have to do at this level, otherwise it turns into a game of basketball.

"I told them that's why they looked so tired on Friday night, they are always chasing.

"But our shape, we were compact, never felt threatened, that's why it's extra disappointing that you give Derry, a top side, you give them a s*** goal, excuse my French."

Duff, in his first managerial role, acknowledged that he is still learning on the job.

"Absolutely, I can shout better, you are always learning," he smiled.

"People think ex-footballers and footballers themselves think, 'I should get a job, I know it all', but I don't.

"I only started to learn about football all over again when I stood on the touchline.

"I'd like to think I always improve in what I do, if I put my mind to it.

"I put my mind to management and I'd like to think I am a better coach-manager than I was two weeks ago.

"If I'm a success or not, from day one I'm so happy and I guess proud of myself that I've done it because it's totally something I'd never even contemplated doing in my life. So regardless of what happens I'd be happy."

Duff is waiting on the result of Jack Moylan's scan after the dangerman pulled up with a hamstring injury on Friday.

Another important figure, Mark Coyle, also came off injured and Duff is already missing Shane Griffin and Dan Carr.

"Jack is x-factor, it's why a lot of people in the league are talking about him, he catches people's eye," said the Reds boss.

"He's devastated, you can see how much it means to him. I was heartbroken for him coming off.

"Jack and another three or four are big losses but that's where the squad has to stand up."
