NAINITAL: While hearing a PIL on abuse of equines on the Char Dham yatra and other pilgrimage routes, the Uttarakhand high court on Wednesday asked the state government to list measures taken by it to care for and regulate the use of animals on such routes.
The PIL, filed by Dehradun-based animal rights activist Gauri Maulekhi, said animals are frequently thrashed, abused and left to die, which also poses a threat to pilgrims and the ecology. A division bench of Acting Chief Justice Sanjay Kumar Mishra and Justice RC Khulbe asked the government to submit a detailed reply within three weeks. The case will next be heard on July 28.
