Uttar Pradesh: Tap water a big respite in parched Bundelkhand, but adaptation a challenge

JHANSI/MAHOBA: With over 90% of the households in Bundelkhand covered under the Har Ghar Jal, a scheme to provide tap water connections within households, the next challenge before the government is to convince the elderly population to start using tap water.

“Yeh paani alag ho (this water tastes different)”, says Kaushalya (who is in her 60s) of Purwa village in sub-division of Jhansi. For generations, the villagers of Bundelkhand have been using hand pumps or open wells for water and people, especially senior citizens, are averse to drinking water being supplied through taps as it tastes different.
