Utah has emerged as the new epicenter of measles in America, with its outbreak exceeding 600 cases this week, including over 400 reported between January and April.
The vast majority of cases in Utah, more than 510 out of 602, are among individuals who were unvaccinated against measles, highlighting the vaccine's critical role in prevention.
Unlike previous outbreaks, many infections in Utah have spread within the general population, with cases traced to public places such as a grocery store, a big box shop, a Latter-day Saints temple, and the University of Utah.
Public health officials are actively dispelling misinformation, with state epidemiologist Dr. Leisha Nolen emphasizing that measles is a severe illness, not mild, and 14 percent of cases in Salt Lake City require hospitalization.
Utah's non-medical exemption rate for childhood vaccinations is higher than the national average, contributing to vulnerability, although the number of weekly cases has significantly decreased since January.
