CHANDIGARH: The UT Powermen Union announced its members went on a 72-hour strike against privatisation of the profitable electricity department from 11pm on Monday, increasing prospects of power and water supply breakdowns and leaving fewer manpower to handle emergency situations.
In a last-bid effort to persuade the union to call off the strike, UT adviser Dharam Pal held a meeting with its representatives in the morning but it failed to break the deadlock. A few hours later, the union announced its decision that could leave resident in the lurch.
