USMNT legend fires 'concerned' warning at Weston McKennie over Leeds United move

Former USA international Eric Wynalda has shared his concern over Weston McKennie's loan move to Leeds United, saying that there were other Premier League clubs that would've fit him better.

The 24-year-old made the switch to Elland Road on Monday night and could become a permanent Whites player if the clauses in his contract become triggered later on this season.

However, some US fans across the pond have been critical of the move, pointing out the fact that there could be too many Americans on one team with Leeds reaching 'overkill' levels.

With McKennie reunited with childhood friend Tyler Adams and World Cup teammate Brenden Aaronson, all playing under American manager Jesse Marsch, Wynalda believes that the midfielder made the wrong choice.

"Is this the best move for Weston McKennie? The answer is probably no," he said while on The Action Network's Wondergoal Podcast earlier this week.

"Juventus are trying to get a couple of the players to walk the plank and get some money out of them due to their current situation. Arsenal and Villa would have been good destinations."

Wynalda continued, saying that he's worried for the image of US football if Leeds do end up getting relegated with three of their most prominent stars playing in the Championship.

"The concerning part for me is if three American players are part of a team that gets relegated. That’s what worries me. I think that it’s a realistic possibility. This is football.

"Jesse Marsch has got great ideas and he turned down Everton for this. He’s not afraid to go for it. He’s not afraid to go for it. He’s not afraid to walk into the fire."
