The University of Southern California has made the decision to cancel its main commencement ceremony for the graduating class of 2024 in May. This move was attributed to the implementation of 'new safety measures' by the university.
In an announcement posted on its website, USC expressed understanding for the disappointment this decision may bring to students and their families. The cancellation of the main commencement ceremony follows a series of related events.
Earlier, the university had to cancel the commencement speech of its Muslim valedictorian, Asna Tabassum, due to security concerns. Subsequently, USC also decided to cancel appearances by notable speakers and honorees at the graduation ceremony scheduled for May 10.
Traditionally, USC's commencement weekend spans from May 8 to May 11, culminating in the main stage ceremony that brings together all 65,000 students and their families. Despite the cancellation of the main ceremony, the university has assured that alternative 'new activities and celebrations' will be organized to ensure that the weekend remains 'meaningful, memorable, and uniquely USC.'
