Approximately 100 US troops are being deployed to Israel to operate the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery, as confirmed by a US defense official. This deployment marks a rare instance of US troops being stationed inside Israel, highlighting the strategic importance of the mission.

The THAAD battery is an anti-missile defense system, and the number of troops being sent aligns with the typical personnel required to operate such a system effectively. The move underscores the strong military cooperation between the US and Israel.

Background on US-Israel Military Relations

Israel receives significant military support from the US, with billions of dollars in aid provided annually. A recent report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) revealed that 69% of Israel's arms imports come from the US.

US-supplied weapons have played a crucial role in Israel's defense strategy, particularly in conflicts with groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. The rapid delivery of guided bombs and missiles, as well as advanced fighter jets like the F-35 and F-15, demonstrates the depth of military assistance provided by the US.

In addition to military hardware, the US also offers substantial financial aid to Israel. Since 1948, over $130 billion in bilateral funding has been delivered to Israel. A Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2019 ensures annual US support of $33.3 billion through the Foreign Military Financing program, along with an extra $500 million designated for missile defense.

The deployment of US troops to operate the THAAD battery in Israel reflects the close defense ties between the two nations and underscores their shared commitment to regional security.
