US tech giant Thoughtworks opens new Tyneside base and creates scores of additional jobs

US tech giant Thoughtworks is creating scores of new jobs after expanding into new city centre offices.

The global consultancy, which first launched a North East base a year ago, helps clients innovate by combining strategy, data, design and software engineering. It employs more than 9,000 people across 17 countries, including bases in London and Manchester. The Chicago-headquartered group said it would create an initial 100 skilled jobs on opening Newcastle, but is now set to create a further 80 roles on the back of expansion into a new base big enough to accommodate growing employee numbers.

Roles at the new office – at Lloyd’s Court on Grey Street – range from senior to junior positions, including places on the company’s entry-level program, Thoughtworks University, a year-long program that trains new recruits in technical and consulting skills. Thoughtworks also has a recruitment scheme aimed at people from all backgrounds.

The new offices, designed by Aptus, have a focus on flexible working with meeting areas to host large scale functions and workshops online, collaborative areas for smaller groups and quiet pods for people needing to work independently. It will also feature social and entertainment spaces.

Matt Simons, market director at Thoughtworks, said: “As Newcastle continues its rise as a leading UK tech hub, Thoughtworks is committed to establishing a presence in the North East, and will look to make a tangible contribution to the region’s growth. We are keen to further expand and invest in the area and cement its status as a tech hub of the UK. “

Patrick B. Sarnacke, managing director of Thoughtworks UK, said: “Our mission at Thoughtworks is to create an extraordinary impact on the world through culture and tech excellence, but we also feel passionate about creating a work environment that is safe, allows for flexibility and fosters collaboration and innovation. Our new hybrid office set up is an opportunity to build an even more interactive and sustainable culture, combining the flexibility, inclusivity and sustainability of remote whilst maintaining the energy and connectedness of meeting colleagues face-to-face.”

North of Tyne mayor Jamie Driscoll said: “Thoughtworks get it. The North East is fast becoming a go-to location for tech companies. It’s excellent news that they’re creating dozens more local jobs, at all levels. This is as much about changing individual lives as it is about boosting the sector and transforming our region.”

Invest Newcastle, part of NewcastleGateshead Initiative, supported Thoughtworks with their move to Newcastle.

Dawn Dunn, digital and tech sector lead at Invest Newcastle, said: “We’ve worked with Thoughtworks throughout their investment journey, and we are incredibly excited about today’s announcement. Thoughtworks are a great cultural fit with our city and its ambitions, demonstrated by their commitment to creating inclusive opportunities for all.

“This new base positions Thoughtworks as an integral part of Newcastle’s growing tech eco-system and the entry-level ‘Thoughtworks University’ programme will play a critical role in the development of our city’s future tech talent pipeline, creating another route for those who want to pursue a career in tech. A great opportunity for anyone wanting to kickstart their start a career at globally recognised tech company in the heart of Newcastle.”

Newcastle City Council’s cabinet member for a resilient city, Coun Alex Hay, added: “I’d like to welcome Thoughtworks to Newcastle. Their decision to invest here is yet another vote of confidence in our city as an emerging tech hub in the UK. The entry level jobs are particularly pleasing as this will give residents the opportunity to start their careers and build their future in a growing city which offers a great quality of life. I look forward to the opening of their office and wish them every success in the future.”
