The US Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld a broad conception of birthright citizenship, rejecting US President Donald Trump's executive order declaring that children born to parents who are in the United States temporarily or without legal documents are not American citizens.

The US Supreme Court on Tuesday handed President Donald Trump a stinging defeat by rejecting his attempt to restrict birthright citizenship in the United States – a right long woven into the fabric of American society – scuttling one of ​his top priorities in his crackdown on immigration.
