US Senate to vote on abortion rights bill -- but what would it mean to codify Roe into law?

The U.S. Senate is expected to vote on May 11, 2022, on a bill that would enshrine the right to an abortion into law.

The Democrats’ bill, the Women’s Health Protection Act, isn’t expected to pass – a previous attempt was blocked by the Senate. But it reflects attempts by abortion rights advocates to find alternative ways to protect a woman’s right to the procedure following the publication of a leaked draft opinion from Justice Samuel Alito indicating that a majority on the Supreme Court intend to overturn Roe v. Wade.
