The Acting US Secret Service Director, Ronald Rowe, highlighted the critical need for law enforcement personnel to communicate via radio during key events and while protecting individuals to ensure maximum collective awareness of potential issues.
Rowe emphasized the importance of radio communication over text chains, stating that it is essential for everyone involved to have situational awareness. He stressed the significance of using radio channels to ensure that all personnel are informed promptly about any emerging situations.
Rowe stated, 'I want people using the radio. It’s crucial that tactical elements, shifts, and all involved parties communicate effectively to maintain situational awareness at all times.'
Before the recent incident involving Thomas Matthew Crooks, much of the communication among law enforcement officers was conducted through text messages. Text exchanges revealed that some officers had raised concerns about Crooks' presence at the rally over 90 minutes before he attempted to harm former President Donald Trump.
The need for improved communication protocols and the emphasis on radio communication have been underscored by the Secret Service in light of recent events. Enhancing communication channels through radio usage is seen as a critical step in ensuring the safety and security of key events and individuals under protection.
