National security adviser will travel to India for a visit focusing on cooperation on strategic technology, including in defense, space, and artificial intelligence. The visit will include a speech at the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi, emphasizing the importance of the U.S.-India partnership in regional and global priorities.
The visit is expected to be the last high-profile visit to India by the Biden administration. During the visit, discussions will be held with Indian National Security Adviser and External Affairs Minister to strengthen ties between the two countries.
In 2022, India and the U.S. launched a technology initiative outlining collaboration on semiconductor production and developing artificial intelligence. This initiative played a crucial role in allowing U.S.-based General Electric to partner with India’s Hindustan Aeronautics for jet engine production in India.
The growing closeness between India and the U.S. is partly in response to China’s increasing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region. The Biden administration hosted a state dinner for Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year, highlighting the strengthening relationship.
However, ties have faced challenges, including U.S. prosecutors' accusations in 2023 linking an official in Modi's government to a foiled assassination plot against an activist of India's Sikh minority in New York, as well as the killing of another Sikh activist in Canada.
