US Military Acquires Korean Air Jets For Doomsday Planes

Recent developments in the aerospace industry have brought attention to the transformation of former commercial aircraft into critical military assets. Five Boeing 747 passenger jets previously operated by Korean Air have been acquired by the Sierra Nevada Corporation, a contractor for the US Air Force's strategic command and control military aircraft, commonly referred to as 'Doomsday' planes.

The Doomsday planes, officially known as E-4B 'Nightwatch,' serve as airborne command centers for the US military in the event of a national emergency, such as nuclear war, where ground-based command facilities are compromised. These aircraft are equipped to accommodate high-ranking officials, including the US president, secretary of defense, and members of the Joint Chiefs, enabling them to oversee military operations globally.

Designed to withstand electromagnetic pulses generated by nuclear explosions, the Doomsday planes play a crucial role in ensuring continuity of command in extreme scenarios. At least one of these aircraft is maintained on standby 24/7 at a US military base worldwide.

Sierra Nevada recently confirmed the acquisition of the Korean Air jets, following a $13 billion contract awarded by the Air Force for the development and production of the new Survivable Airborne Operations Center, slated for completion by 2036. The upgrade to 747-800 airframes from the older 747-200 models currently in service marks a significant advancement in the Doomsday fleet's capabilities.

Korean Air's decision to sell five of its 747-800 aircraft aligns with its strategic plan for fleet modernization, with the transaction expected to be finalized by September 30, 2025. The airline, which currently operates nine 747-800 passenger jets, aims to introduce new aircraft as part of its long-term operational strategy.

Sierra Nevada's expansion, including the establishment of a large aircraft maintenance facility in Ohio and ongoing construction of additional hangars, underscores the company's commitment to supporting critical defense programs and enhancing national security capabilities.
